Queen Bee Cage is constructed of heavy duty metal mesh and is used for introducing queens to new colonies. The cage is placed over emerging brood along with a bit of capped honey and pushed down into the comb. This allows the newly emerged nurse bees to take care of the new queen and spread her pheromones. As the brood emerges there are now open cells that the new queen can lay eggs into spreading even more of her pheromones.
There are 2 openings in the queen cage with metal swivel doors that fit snug to keep them from moving accidently. The top cage door is used for introducing the queen bee. The side door can be closed / opened and holds queen fondant in the tube section for the gradual release of the queen. The queen can live quite a long time behind the cage as long as there are enough supporting bees in the colony – although it is best to release her soon after she is fully accepted.
The cage is made of heavy duty metal and can be boiled to sanitize it between uses.
